Voicethread Book Club - "Fly Away Home"

Last month the students from Mrs. Yollis' and Mr. Salsich's classes read Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting.

Eve Bunting has written hundreds of excellent books for children. Many of her books deal with difficult situations, and the ways that people deal with them.

Fly Away Home is about a homeless boy and his father who live at an airport. It is a great book for having a book club because there are many different opinions and feelings that people can have about the book.

In our book clubs we have been focusing on:
  • Supporting our opinions with details from the text.
  • Listening carefully to what others say and responding to their ideas.
  • Adding onto others opinions by agreeing or disagreeing politely.
  • Looking back in the text for details that connect to people's ideas.

Here is our "Voicethread book club" about the book:

If you have read the book and have a voicethread account, feel free to add a comment in the voicethread. Let's keep the discussion going!

Have you read any other Eve Bunting books? What did you think of them?

  1. Dear RR,

I am Margot in Mr. Salsich's class. I really liked the voice thread! I thought it was very interesting to hear what people thought about the book Fly Away Home because everyone thought something different and everyone looked at the book from a different point of view. It was a bit like when you or someone else was blamed for something, and you are trying to prove your case or back up the person who was blamed for something's case.

I liked the voice thread because everyone spoke clearly and loudly. Everything that people said made a lot of sense and I liked all the things that people said.

I think for if the security guards should let Andrew and his father be in the airport, they should not blame other people but in all, I think that they should not be allowed to go in the airport.

    From,
    Margot* :-)

  2. Dear cowboys and cowgirls,

I've never read Fly Away Home before but after all those great comments, I can't wait to! That's what I love about this blog, finding out about all these different books and how students feel about them.

I can't wait to see what book you work with next!

    Your reading buddy,
    Mr. Avery
