Welcome!

What book are you reading right now?

What's the genre?
(That's a fancy way of asking What kind of book is it? What category is it?
Mystery, realistic fiction, historical fiction, adventure, sports...)

Tell us about the main character!

Unless you're a greenhorn, you know that an underlined word or phrase on the Internet is a hyperlink. That means we can't underline book titles like we do out on the trail.
So all you buckaroos, lasso the html code and put your book title...in italics!
Yee haw!

Wow! What a fantastic collaborative project!

Mr Salsich and Mrs Yollis - I never knew you were such wonderful wild west actors! I couldn't stop smiling when I was watching your amazing video. :)

I am just between books at the moment but I sure ♥ reading! I especially ♥ non-fiction books and biographies. I ♥ to go to our public library where there are so many terrific books to borrow!

I can't wait to hear more about your reading adventures.

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis & Mr. Salsich,
I loved this video. I think it is so great that two teachers across the country can work together on class projects and even make a video together. Teaching is so different from when I was in third grade. I love to read. I read a lot of books, but I need to find a new good one right now. I'm looking forward to seeing what the kids are reading! Maybe even the parents and teachers will have some good suggestions!

  4. Howdy Sheriffs,

I am reading a book called Franny K. Stein Frantastic Voyage by Jim Benton. It is in the genre called fantasy because Franny can change her size and grow to be 50 feet and fight a 50' Cupid!

The main character is Franny who is a mad scientist. She is in third grade, so she's probably 8 or 9 years old.

The book is about Franny who distracts her dog/lab assistant Igor by making him watch T.V. Franny had been working on a doomsday bomb to protect her lab equipment from space creatures! She is a crazy girl! On the other hand, Igor was imitating everything he saw on T.V. For example, there was a show about grapes and Igor wanted to eat some grapes. Unfortunately, he ate the doomsday bomb! I won't tell you the rest...but you will ♥ it!

    Has anyone read this book?

Miss McGeady, what does down under mean?

  5. Dear Sheriffs,

I'm reading Horrible Harry and the Ant Invasion by Suzy Kline. The genre is realistic fiction because it is about a boy named Harry and he doesn't have any special powers. He's just a plain, normal boy and nothing unusual happens. He got bit by a red ant. Ouch!

I have a question for anyone. What is your favorite genre and why?

    Sincerely,
    Andrew

  6. Howdy Sheriffs!

My favorite genre is realistic fiction because I like reading stories that could really happen.

The book I'm reading is Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary. The main character is Ramona and she is a kindergartner. So she is about 5 years old. She does funny things. For example, one time she was stomping in the mud and she got stuck! The traffic helper had to pull her out. He boots were left in the mud!

I would love to have a friend like Ramona because she is really funny!

  7. Dear Sheriff S★lsich & Sheriff Y★llis,

I like this blog already because I like cowboys. I am reading a book called Catch That Pass by Matt Christopher. The genre is sports, and I know that because it is about football. It is about a boy named Jim who is on a football team, but is scared to be tackled so, he always drops interceptions.

I play flag football and there is someone on my team who sometimes tackles people. I would be scared of being tackled, so I know how Jim must feel.

    Does anybody play football?
Has anyone ever been scared of being tackled?

    Sincerely,
    Jaden★

  8. Dear Sheriff Y★llis and Sheriff S★lsich,

I have been reading a book called Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. It is in the genre realistic fiction. I know this because the main character, Peter, has no special powers whatsoever. I would not like to be Peter because he has a little brother named Fudge and he is very annoying. For example, he never listens to his brother. One time he jumped off a jungle gym and knocked out his two front teeth! However, if I was him, then I would have a pet turtle. ☺
    Here are some questions:

    Has anyone read this book?

If so, did you like it?

  10. Dear Sheriff Yollis and Sheriff Salsich,

Right now I am reading The Boxcar Children and the Mystery in the Corn Maze. It is in the genre realistic fiction because everything that occurs in the story could really happen.

The book is about four siblings going with their grandfather to their grandfather's friend's home. The man that the house belongs to has a corn maze and many strange things were happening. For example, someone was putting toilet paper all around the maze. The Boxcar Children are trying to figure out the mystery, but if I were them, I would think it was Jack the owner of the corn maze's friend. I think he's responsible because he is acting like he is very happy that all of these bad things are happening and that the maze has to be closed down. I wonder if I'm right!

Has anyone read this book? Has anyone read any other Boxcar Children books in the series?

Thanks for the kind words. I am very looking that I bumped into sheriff Yollis on the blogging trail a few years back, we have learned so much from each other.

We would love to have your students leave comments on the blog as well if they are interested.

I think the best way to work towards a project like this is to just keep making connections with other classroom blogs. You'll get a sense of which ones have similar goals and expectations as you, and also which ones inspire you with new ideas. Mrs. Yollis and I have done a few smaller scale projects over the last year, and this just kind of developed out of one of those.

My students and I are really enjoying your blog, especially the student tutorials.

I am reading Horrible Harry Goes To The Moon.

The Author is Suzy Kline. This book's genre is fantasy, because harry said Neil Armstrong played golf on the moon! I know he didn't.

I recommend this book because Harry, who is the main character, says he will go to the moon but instead meets them at the "moon watch" and surprises every one. It sure is a fun book to read.

This a great new colaborative blog! The Reading Round-Up is a great name!

I have been into Harry Potter books by J.K Rowling. I have read Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and I just finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on Monday. They are the first, second and third books. I have also watched the movies too.

Harry Potter books are fiction and the genre is fantasy. The main character is Harry and he goes to a school called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. On the way he meets two friends, Ron (Ronald) Weasley and Herminone Granger. They always find out mysteries in the castle of Hogwarts. and they always figure it out! Harry is also famous. His parents died by a very mean wizard called Lord Voldemort. Wizards and witchs don't speak his name so they call him You Know Who or You Know Who Must Not Be Named. He got a lightning bolt scare on his head from Lord Voldemort. Voldemort couldn't kill him because he lost all his powers.

Mr Salsich and Mrs Yollis you must never sleep or eat. Just how do you find the time?

In class today we read by David Legge. David also drew all of the pictures.
The story is about a little girl who tries to work out what is wrong at her grandfather's house one day when she goes to visit him.
We love to find all the things in the pictures that are bamboozling!

If you were just to read Bamboozled without the pictures, it would come under the genre of realistic fiction. With the pictures, it is very much fiction.

I just finished reading Horrible Harry in Class 2B last night. It was probably realistic fiction because all these things could happen but they did not. The main character is Harry and he loves to do horrible things. In one chapter he makes these people that are supposed to invade the room but everyone thinks they are cute. Yesterday my grandma got me the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid called Diary of a Wimpy Kid:The Ugly Truth. It just came out yesterday. I am on page 100. There are about 215 pages in the book! Your definition of a context clue is a bull's-eye! I have a question for you...could you share a word or two that you figured out using context clues? Maybe you could teach us a thing or two!

I have a question about your book Your Mother Was A Neanderthal. How do the boys go back in time?

  56. Dear Reading Round-Up buddies,

I am so excited that our new blog is off to such a great start! Right now we have a whopping 55 comments! Sheriff Yollis and I certainly have some great blogging buddies to ride the trail with.

This is a great post to get ideas about new books to read. There are so many excellent recommendations, and a wide variety of books. It does look like there are some popular books and series that several students like though:

Franny K. Stein by Jim Benton
    Stink by Megan McDonald
    ☆ Fantasy books about fairies

Many of the students in our class are reading books by Roald Dahl because we are enjoying The BFG as a read aloud. I love that book! (I wonder, can anyone tell me what "frobscottle" is? Or a "trogglehumper"?)

Keep up the great reading buckaroos!

    Happy trails,
    Sheriff Salsich

  57. Dear Sophie,

This is Adia, Hannah, and Iman from Mrs. Yollis' class. What a spectacular comment! We ♥ to read just like you!

We have never heard of the series that you were writing about called Magic Ballerina. Someday, we hope to read it because you think it is so wonderful.

Our favorite series is The Boxcar Children. The books are very interesting because there is always a mystery to solve and we ♥ mysteries. They are called the Boxcar Children because they were orphaned and lived in a boxcar. A boxcar is an enclosed railway car with a sliding door on one side. This is a definition sentence! We've been learning about definition sentences in class. :-)

Their grandfather found them and they now live with him. What a happy ending!

Have you ever read any books from the series?

Hope to hear from you soon!

    Do you recommend any books?

  59. @Ella,

We have never heard of the book Your Mother Was A Neanderthal but, we would defenitly love to read it!

Iman is reading a book called Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. It is about A boy named Peter who has a little brother named Farly Drexel Hatcher but they call him Fudge. It is a realistic fiction because all the things that happen can really come true.

Miriam is reading There is a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom The book is by Louis Sachar. The
book is about a boy that doesn't study well, and his friend goes into the girls' bathroom accidentally. It is realistic fiction because somebody could accidentally go into the girls' bathroom.

  60. Dear Sheriff Yollis and Sheriff Salsich,

Yee-Haw! I am so thrilled to stumble across this new project. My students and I love reading and many of my fourth graders have rounded-up 30 or more Reading Counts point this year, alone! I am sure they will enjoy sharing some of their favorite books with ya'll.

I, myself, love to read. It's one of my favorite hobbies, in fact. I enjoy fiction the most. I love learning about different cultures or time periods through the books I read. I suppose you might call my favorite genre "historical fiction."

    Do ya'll enjoy historical fiction?

    Take care, ya hear?

  61. Dear Mrs. Yollis's class,
This is Ben, Miriam's cousin, and I am currently reading Changes by Jim Butcher. It is a fantasy novel about wizards, vampires, and magic. I enjoy reading fantasy novels because anything is possible in a fantasy story. Many of the monsters and creatures in the novel aren't real, but the author describes them with so much detail that they seem real. Someday I hope to write my own fantasy novel, that will entertain hundreds of readers, just like Jim Butcher does with his novels.

If you were to write your own fantasy book or story, what would it be called, and what would it be about?

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Ben (Miriam's cousin),
I also like scary fantasy stories. I can't wait to read one of your stories. If I would write a fantasy story it would be about large wild animals that are scaring all the people and how a little girl defeated them.

    Sarah

  63. Dear Sheriff Yollis,

Thank you for the nice compliment.

One example of context clues is:
"Her sister annoyed her and made her irate". I didn't know what irate meant, but I saw the word annoyed so I figured out it meant mad.

The boys in my book went back in time by a magic, blue book with strange silver designs.

See you next time I stop at this part of the trail,

  64. @Mrs. Madden,
I also like historical fiction. Mary Pope Osborne the author of the popular series The Magic Tree House, also wrote a historical fiction series called Dear America. Each book is written in the form of a diary taking place during the time of an important historical event. I read the book titled My Secret War. It was about a girl called Madeline who lived during World War II.

I would recommend this book to everyone.

  65. @Ben (my cousin),

I don't like scary books and probably would not enjoy reading the books that you like. I like stories with happy endings.

If I where to write a fantasy book, it would be a funny story about friendly aliens that save the planet from bad humans destroying the planet. The story would definetly have a happy ending and will make you laugh.

  66. @Mr Salsich,
I have also read the BFG which stands for the Big Friendly Giant. The word frobscottle was a delicious drink that was fizzy and refreshing that the giant drank instead of eating children. The giant also had big ears and could catch dreams. A trogglehumper is a nightmare or a bad dream. The giant hated to catch those.

I hope your class enjoys reading this book.

What a spectacular comment you wrote! Wow you are an outstanding writer!

I have never read the book Your Mother was a Neanderthal. What is a Neanderthal? I am going to look out for that book when I go to the Calabasas Library. It sounds like a terrific book to read.

I noticed that you said that one of the main characters needs glasses. So do I! Does that boy wear reading glasses or the other kind? I don't wear reading glasses, because I only have a problem with seeing distance, NOT seeing close up.

I also noticed that one of the boys knows magic. That is amazing! I would love to know magic, so I could turn my brother Stefan into a monkey. :-)

There are some questions I would like you to answer:

Do you think it is cool that the boy has magic powers?

Would you like to know magic?

What a fantastic comment! Actually, I have never read the book Go Girls.

You mentioned that the girl in the story had broke her arm and had to have it in a cast for six weeks. That's funny because in kindergarten I broke my arm and I had to have it in a cast for seven weeks.

You also said that the girl had dogs. Sadly, I don't have a dog but someday I hope to get one. Do you have a dog? If so, what type of dog is it?

To answer your question, I am reading a chapter book. It is called The Boxcar Children and the Mystery in the Snow.

I will not tell you what it is about because I would like you to find out about it yourself. Please write a comment to me if you do read the book.

  70. Dear Sheriffs,

I am reading Tigers At Twighlight. It is by Mary Pope Osborne. The book is about Jack and Annie visiting a jungle in Africa. They get chased by a lion and then they find elephants and get on top of them. Jack and Annie do that because tigers do not attack elephants. In the middle of the night, a lion gets trapped. Jack and Annie undo the trap and then the lion attacks them. To find out more you need to read the story.

Has anyone read this book? Has anyone read any others in this series?

The book I am reading Is Three cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. The genre is non fiction.

Greg Mortenson is an American who helps build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan through his charity, Pennies for Peace. Most of the schools are for girls because Greg Mortenson believes that educating them helps the community more. When girls grow up and become mothers they teach their children.

I really like the book. It makes me feel happy because Greg Mortenson is helping many children who are not as lucky as we are. I think it's sad that children in Pakistan and Afghanistan don't have schools. I hope that he keeps building schools for them.
